Class 57 Profile and Models

The fleet of Class 57s were produced from 1998 to 2004 by re-manufacturing existing Class 47 locomotives. They were fitted with re-conditioned EMD engines and the same style of traction alternator fitted to the Class 56 to improve their reliability and performance. Three variants exist, one for freight and two for passenger operations. The class were significantly cheaper to rebuild than a new locomotive would cost to construct. The 57s have seen heavy use on a myriad of services including express passenger, railtours, freight and even as “thunderbird” locomotives to rescue stranded trains. |
