The GNR produced a large fleet of Class J23 locomotives (later reclassified to J50 by the LNER) for use on short-haul coal traffic and shunting. Their unusual design featured long side tanks that came to the front of the smokebox and sloped down to improve visibility - they were nicknamed “Submarines” due to this. The class plied their trade in the North East for many years and survived in BR usage right up to the mid 1960s. |
