Following the success of the rebuilding of SR Merchant Navy class locomotives, it was decided that 60 of the streamlined Class 7P6F locomotives would also be rebuilt to a more conventional design. Their casing was removed and replaced with conventional boiler cladding, boiler pressure was reduced to 250psi and the chain-driven valve gear was replaced with modified Walschaerts valve gear. The entirety of the streamlined class were to be rebuilt but the early onset of the BR modernisation plan meant that this was not to be. The rebuilt locomotives reduced repair costs by up to 60% and also lowered coal consumption, however, they did introduce new issues including a heavier weight which affected their route availability.
