A specialist vehicle designed for cross-channel freight traffic, 400 Ferry Vans were built to Diagram 1/227 and were transported to and from the continent by British Railways' train ferries. Whilst they were superceded on these duties in the early 1980s, the long wheelbase and dual brake equipment resulted in the wagons being used for other roles, including engineering use, with several vehicles heavily modified for their new roles.
