The GWR 3031 Class (aka the Dean Single or Achilles class) were a fleet of 4-2-2 locomotives designed by William Dean for use on GWR passenger services. The first examples of the class were produced as convertible broad gauge locos and were later converted to standard gauge operation. The first 30 were originally built as 2-2-2 locos but due to various issues, they were rebuilt as 4-2-2s, with a later batch of 50 built from the ground up with the latter configuration. Despite their speed, the class were found to be outdated and unsuitable for modern operations in the 1900s, so they were soon withdrawn from service - with the final loco 3074 “Princess Helena” bowing out in 1916.
