The Great Eastern Railway produced a large fleet of Class Y14 locomotives (later classified as J15s by the LNER) for use as “maids of all work” on both freight and passenger services. Following their introduction, they were so successful that they were produced continuously for 30 years with little change to the design. Some members of the class saw use in France and Belgium in WW1. A number of the class managed to survive well into the 1950s under British Railways ownership and one made it into preservation.
