The GWR 1600 class were a fleet of 70 0-6-0 pannier tank steam locomotives designed for use on light branch-line passenger services, short-distance freight transfers and shunting duties. Although entirely a GWR design, by Frederick Hawksworth, all of the class were built and used by the Western region of Britsih Railways after nationalisation. When the last locomotive was built, the basic design was over 80 years old and it was the last GWR-designed locomotive to be constructed at Swindon works. The class had a short life with BR, with withdrawals starting in 1959 and ending in 1966. Some were used by the National Coal Board into the 1960s. A single member of the class was prevered - No. 1638. |
