In the 1950s & 1960s, British Rail realised a need for a new fleet of wagons to transport rolled strip steel, resulting in the Diagram 1/412 Coil A KAV wagons. They first appeared in 1962, transporting cold reduced coil steel from Hawarden Bridge Steelworks at Shotton in North Wales. The wagons utilised spare underframes originally intended for 21 ton mineral wagons and featured a 16ft well for transporting their cargo, protected by a nylon hood. The hood was manoeuvred using a framework of three movable bars. The Coil As enjoyed a long life, remaining in BR service until the 1990s, with the latest examples scrapped by 1992.
