The Great Central Railway built a fleet of 'Class 3' (later LNER Class F1) 2-4-2T tank locomotives to operate on local passenger services in the Manchester area, to displace aging 2-4-0 tender locomotives. Two main variations were built, an original batch between 1889 and 1891 and a second 'Class 3 Altered' batch in 1893, which featured a longer bunker. The class were very successful in their duties, operating in Manchester right up until 1949. None were preserved. |
