The LMS inherited a huge number of wagons following the grouping of railway companies in 1923 but many were in need of replacement. The LMS embarked on a programme to build a new fleet of goods wagons, one of which was the Diagram 1666 open wagon. A staggering 54,450 were built, making this the most prolific LMS wagon design. The first were built to an existing Midland Railway design. Many of these survived into use with British Railways but due to them having timber underframes, they didn't last quite as long as their steel underframed counterparts. |
