The fleet of 56 ton 'Consett' iron ore carrying wagons were produced by British Railways to fulfill a contract between BR and the Consett Iron Ore Company of the North East. Iron ore was unloaded at Tyne Docks by ship and was unloaded into bunkers for transfer by rail to the Consett Iron works. The vehicles replaced the ageing fleet of LNER 21 ton hoppers and featured air-powered doors for unloading at a quicker rate. The wagons were retired in the mid 1970s and replaced with far larger 100 ton PTA wagons. |
