The GWR Class 6000 or ‘King’ class were a fleet of express passenger locomotives introduced in 1927 for use on the GWR’s principal services. They were the largest locos built by the GWR (apart from the unique ‘Great Bear’ locomotive) and were named after kings of the UK and England, beginning with the then reigning monarch - King George V. The GWR’s general manager was anxious for a new design that would enable the company to claim to run the UK’s most powerful locomotive, leading to the ‘Kings’ having around 40,000 lbf of tractive effort. They could be seen working on GWR’s crack express workings such as the Cornish Riviera Limited.
